Noise vs. signal in company intelligence

Too much unstructured information is not helpful for professionals. We explain why filtering and structure matter more than raw information volume.

The noise problem

The volume of company-related information published daily has never been higher. Press releases, social media posts, news articles, blog entries, podcast mentions, analyst notes, regulatory filings — the list grows every year.

For professional teams responsible for tracking company and market developments, this creates a paradox: more information is available than ever, but finding the signals that actually matter has become harder, not easier.

This is the noise problem.

Why more information does not mean better intelligence

Consider a typical scenario. A communications team needs to brief their leadership on competitive developments in the technology sector across three Asian markets. They might encounter:

  • 200+ press releases from wire services
  • Dozens of social media posts from company accounts
  • Multiple news articles with overlapping or contradictory information
  • Regulatory filings in three different languages
  • Analyst commentary with varying levels of accuracy

Without structure and filtering, this team spends more time sorting through information than actually analyzing it. The intelligence function becomes a bottleneck rather than an enabler.

What separates signal from noise

In our work, we define noise as information that:

  • Lacks source credibility — unverified claims, secondary commentary, or social media speculation
  • Duplicates existing knowledge — the same announcement repackaged across multiple outlets
  • Lacks structural clarity — raw text without categorization, tagging, or contextual framing
  • Arrives too late — information that was relevant last week but is no longer actionable
  • Lacks relevance — information about companies, industries, or regions outside the user's scope

A signal, by contrast, is information that is:

  • Source-verified — traceable to an official or authoritative source
  • Unique — deduplicated against existing signals in the system
  • Structured — categorized by event type, company, industry, and region
  • Timely — captured and processed within a useful decision window
  • Relevant — matched to the user's companies, industries, and themes of interest

The cost of noise

Noise is not just an inconvenience. It has real costs for professional teams:

  • Time waste. Analysts spend hours filtering instead of analyzing.
  • Missed signals. Important developments get buried under irrelevant information.
  • Decision fatigue. Too many inputs without structure leads to slower, less confident decisions.
  • Trust erosion. When intelligence feeds are noisy, stakeholders stop trusting them.

How SigFact addresses this

Our approach to the noise problem is systematic:

  1. Source architecture. We track official company sources and classify them by reliability tier, rather than aggregating everything equally.
  2. Automated deduplication. Our pipeline identifies and removes duplicate signals before they reach users.
  3. Structured taxonomy. Every signal is categorized by event type, tagged by company and industry, and connected to related developments.
  4. Quality scoring. Signals are scored based on source reliability, completeness, and relevance.
  5. Configurable filtering. Users can filter by company, industry, region, event type, and time period to focus on what matters to their specific workflow.

The goal is not to show users everything. It is to show them what matters.
